Mobisol bringing affordable solar power to Rwanda

Mobisol Rwanda, Germany-based firm, which started its operations in Rwanda in 2014, has delivered a new set of remote, off-grid solar products in the country. Mobisol also launched a special campaign known as the “Walking Christmas Tree” to sensitize communities on the benefit of using solar power and reducing poverty in rural areas.01installing-panels

Available data show that it is just about 25 per cent of Rwanda’s population that is connected to electricity. Speaking in the city yesterday, the Mobisol Sales and Marketing Manager Mr Ben Okello said in Kigali the Moving Christmas Tree campaign will be conducted in several regions to create awareness on clean, affordable and reliable electricity.

“We are touring various areas with a “Moving Christmas Tree” decorated with solar-powered lights and are showcasing to rural communities how solar energy can improve their quality of life and economic opportunities,” he said.

Our products will help rural residents to prevent the use of kerosene and firewood, which put their lives on a number of health hazards, including emission of smoke, which is associated with a range of negative health effects including lung cancer.

Mobisol offers an attractive ‘rent-to-own’ model, providing customers with high-quality solar home systems of 100W or 200W as customers make small payments via mobile money for up to three years. Customers can pay as little RWF 399 per day to own a German designed, high quality solar power system at their homes. ‘’It is an important point, mr Okello said; our customers want to own their equipment and not just paying a never-ending monthly service fee for something they will never own. We are pleased to offer them that’ The system sizes offered start at 100W, which is already bigger than most other household oriented solar home systems in the region, and are also available in 200W. ‘Real electrification requires big systems, mr Okello said’

Mobisol RWanda Sales and Marketing Manager Ben Okello said that in addition to the solar home systems, customers can also acquire other solar-powered appliances such as haircutters, music systems, irons, fans and business solutions such as multiple phone chargers.

“Mobisol offers high-quality electrification solutions to people who can’t just go to a shop and buy an $800 solar system, but can pay in small installments. We want to electrify entire houses: We don’t see two three lights and phone charging as electrification. It is a nice way of improving lives, but we believe in powering entire households and businesses with all kinds of appliances. We additionally provide free installation, long and a comprehensive after sales service including warrantee and free installation and maintenance service for three years.

Mobisol wants to bring the lasting “modern lifestyle” to rural areas.” Mr Okello went on to point out that one of the company’s objectives is to enable children who study in rural areas where there is no power to have light and access to information via radio, TV and internet that empowers them to increase their educational opportunities. “We are also focusing on conserving the environment – while, at the same time, the electricity we provide offers an opportunity for people to utilize it for various income generating activities which improve their economic wellbeing”.

Mr. Okello further elaborated that Mobisol has recently launched the biggest solar TV in the region, a 32’’ flat screen high performance TV which is also demonstrated with the moving Christmas Tree campaign. “The TV is a selling point in itself. It is aspirational. People may live in rural areas but they too want to understand what is going on in the world and they too are aiming big. They want a modern lifestyle. We are here for that”.
